International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The HKEAA conducts benchmarking studies regularly to compare the score levels of the HKDSE English Language Examination to those of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The table below shows the equivalents of Level 3 to Level 5** on the HKDSE English Language Examination with respect to the IELTS band levels, based on a pooled sample of HKDSE English Language Examination candidates (2019, 2021 and 2023) who voluntarily provided their IELTS results to the HKEAA for data analysis.

NARIC (2010)

HKEAA has worked with the UK National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC)* for the recognition of the HKDSE for general education and employment. The NARIC report indicates that a wide range of competency is covered in the HKDSE. At levels 1 and 2, the emphasis is placed on fundamental knowledge; the report affirms that they reflect achievement at HKCEE level. At levels 3 to 5, where emphasis is placed on sophisticated application of subject knowledge; it reflects on achievement at HKALE level.
